BIOGRAPHY
Alex co-founded Pathway in 2009 with Professor Aidan Halligan and Dr Nigel Hewett. Since then Pathway has supported the creation of over 20 specialist inclusion health teams in hospitals across the UK, grown the Faculty for Homeless and Inclusion Health into a national network of over 2,500 practitioners, and persuaded the NHS that Inclusion Health must be a key component of any action on health equity.
From 2000 to 2009 Alex worked at the Greater London Authority. In 2004 he joined the Mayor of London’s team as a senior policy advisor. Initially responsible for planning policy and the Mayor’s development control functions he shaped the first major alterations to the London Plan, including radical new climate change policies.
In 2005 he took on the health brief in the Mayor’s Office, helping to win for London new powers to produce a regional health inequalities strategy and overseeing the development of London’s first statutory health inequalities strategy. He was also chair of London’s £600M European Social Fund and European Regional Development Fund Committees, Chaired the Greater London Alcohol and Drugs Alliance and represented the Mayor on the London Child Poverty Commission.
From 2010 to 2014 Alex was also the first Chief Operating Officer of The Staff College: Leadership in Healthcare and he became a founding Trustee of the organisation when it became an independent charity in 2015. From 2015 to 2022 he was also Chair of inequalities campaign group My Fair London. Alex has a degree in history and a Masters in London Studies. He is a regular speaker on inclusion health, health inequalities and London. He has lived in East London for the last 30 years.
